As today, from the studios in Milan, at 9 pm on 10 September 1952, the first Italian news program in history was broadcast, which forever changed the history of information in Italy.
La popolazione italiana per la prima volta poté assistere al telegiornale e da quel momento diventerà il più importante mezzo di informazione. Lo speaker che andrà a informare dei fatti accaduti in Italia e nel mondo sarà Riccardo Paladini con la dirThe Italian population was able to watch the news for the first time and from that moment on it will become the most important means of information. The speaker who will inform about the events that took place in Italy and in the world will be Riccardo Paladini with the direction of Vittorio Veltroni. The intent of the few men who organized this first exclusive was to report the events that had already appeared in the newspaper and to create direct links with Rome and other Italian cities.
On the screen all the news was seen in black and white. The technical difficulties were not few, the images due to the poor quality of the means of recovery were deformed, sometimes the faces were elongated, others enlarged and still others even had two fronts.
Clearly the suspense of today’s news is very different from that of before which was almost non-existent and unnoticed by viewers, as well as the duration which was, unlike now, only fifteen minutes.
The first news program had as its theme the brass and strings orchestra that evoked the medieval figure of the herald with the famous “Globetrotter”, a small adaptation of the radio program “The Three Musketeers”.
The news only aired three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) and only a year later, it became daily. This huge event, clearly, gave a turning point to state TV, revolutionizing it both in the field of communication and in that of information.
The facts dealt with in the first Italian news program mainly concerned current events.
The first news broadcast reported the historic Venice regatta held a few days earlier.
The news of the death and funeral of the Soviet leader Stalin was also given, characterized by a footage not related to the event as the dictator was noticed in the procession.
Greetings to Count Sforza for his death and the bullfight held in Portugal a few days earlier.
There was talk of electoral cigarettes conceived in America (in the light of the political duel that saw Eisenhower and Stevenson as protagonists) and the Italian Grand Prix raced in Monza on 7 September 1952 which saw the famous driver Alberto Ascari triumph.
The following year, after the first broadcast, more precisely in 1953, the news will become daily, slightly improved and renewed. Very important events were broadcast not only for Italy but also for the world, such as, for example, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Subsequently, the cameras began to come out of the Milan studio to film the events that had happened live to touch them, in this way, with hand and to be able to document them in a better way.
Gradually, the editorial staff of the news grew and began to have several commentators for the key topics: from politics to news, to sport and entertainment. Rai sent the first correspondents to the most important capitals of Northern Italy.
The regularity of the broadcast arrives on January 3, 1954, when the first official newscast is also drawn up. An evening news broadcast lasting 20 minutes. At the time, the formats that inspired us were the very popular radio newspaper, the newsreel of the Istituto Luce and the printed newspaper.
